It follows the children through one school year; from the grueling auditions where one class of twenty 8 to 13 year olds is chosen from thousands of applicants, to the rigorous rehearsals of upper-class students preparing for their final graduation performance. Separated from their families, these children are fully immersed in the art to which they will dedicate their lives.
The late Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco narrates this Oscar-nominated look at one of the world's greatest schools of dance, the Vaganova Choreographic Institute in Russia - also called the Kirov School - whose elite graduates have become some of the greatest dancers in the history of ballet, including such legends as Nureyev, Baryshnikov, Nijinsky, Pavlova, and Balanchine.
